Surrey wrapped up victory over Warwickshire by an innings and one run on day four of their Specsavers County Championship Division One clash at the Oval.

The visitors began the day needing another 41 runs to make Surrey bat again with Jonathan Trott resuming on 141.

He and Jeetan Patel (29) edged Warwickshire, who had been skittled for just 91 in their first innings, towards that mark before Tom Curran trapped the latter lbw.

Trott (151) went through to his 150 but his resistance was finally broken by Mark Footitt (2-104) and just when the Surrey openers would have been resigned to having to pad up for a second time in the match, Curran (4-88) bowled Chris Wright (8) to seal the win.

Surrey take 23 points from the victory while Warwickshire head back to the midlands with just a solitary point to show for their efforts.

Meanwhile, Dan Lawrence made a superb unbeaten 141 as Essex frustrated Lancashire to earn a battling draw at Chelmsford.

Lawrence batted throughout the day as Essex, needing 478 to win, began day four on 89-2 and requiring resilience of the highest order to avoid defeat.

That was provided, initially, by Lawrence and Tom Westley, who put on 135 for the third wicket. Stephen Parry (2-52) eventually bowled Westley (61) to break the stand and when Kyle Jarvis removed Ravi Bopara (4) and Adam Wheater (1), Lancashire looked primed to run through the lower order quickly.

However, they were thwarted by another century stand. Ryan ten Doeschate (41) and Lawrence added 102 for the sixth wicket before the former fell to Jarvis (3-58) with just over 10 overs remaining.

It was too little, too late for Lancashire though as Essex dug in to close on 316-6 and claim a valuable draw in their first game back in the top flight.
