Yorkshire required just 48 balls on the final morning to complete an innings-and-and-88-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston in the Specsavers County Championship.

The home side, trailing by 203 on first innings, resumed on 85-9 and last pair Jeetan Patel and Oliver Hannon-Dalby took the score to 115 before the latter missed a forward push at Adil Rashid and was bowled.

Patel had just lifted Rashid straight for six and was left unbeaten on 49, from 65 balls with five fours and that one six, while young seamer Ben Coad ended with 5-50 for match figures of 10-102.

Yorkshire's resounding victory was an emphatic response to their surprise defeat to Hampshire in their opening game last week.

"It was a big week for us having played so well last week when we didn't get anything out of the game," said first-team coach Andrew Gale. "I thought we showed a lot of character."

Scott Borthwick and Kumar Sangakkara hit hundreds as Surrey lost only two wickets on the final day to secure a worthy draw with Lancashire.

The two left-handers showed admirable patience and technique by combining to add 256 for the third wicket, as Sangakkara posted his seventh first-class hundred for the Brown Caps.

At the other end, Borthwick notched his first ton in Surrey colours and remained unbeaten on 108 as the hosts reached 323 for three - for a lead of 172 when the players shook hands on the draw at 4.50pm.

Middlesex began their title defence with a hard-fought draw with Hampshire after some dogged resistence from their tail allowed them to finish on 278-9.

Toby Roland-Jones, Ollie Rayner and Tim Murtagh magnificently saved them from defeat after Hampshire had looked set to ease to victory following three wickets with the second new ball but the visitors held on at the Ageas Bowl.

Middlesex had been in defensive mood throughout the fourth day after starting with a slender lead of 27 and six wickets in hand. Australian Adam Voges moved carefree through a 115-ball half-century as Hampshire took
their foot off the gas approaching the second new ball.
