LV County Championship: Chris Jordan becomes country's leading wicket-taker

Sussex's Chris Jordan claimed figures of 6-97 against Nottinghamshire to become the country's leading wicket-taker.

Last Updated: 02/06/13 6:08pm

Jordan removed Luke Fletcher at the tail-end of Nottinghamshire's first innings as the visitors - who had resumed on 321-8 - were bowled out for 356.

Jordan then helped Ben Brown put on 47 for the seventh wicket as Sussex reached 290-6 at stumps, 66 runs behind.

Having already bagged his third five-wicket haul of the season on day one, Jordan produced another high-quality spell on a responsive pitch to claim his sixth wicket of the innings when Fletcher (8), playing away from his body, was held shoulder-high at second slip by Mike Yardy.

But last man Harry Gurney (4 not out) hung around long enough to see Ajmal Shahzad progress to the fourth half-century of his career.

Shahzad was last out, caught behind on 56 to give James Anyon his second wicket, but Notts' last four wickets had put on 244 and secured their side their fourth batting point - an unlikely scenario when they had been 112-6 on the first day.

In reply, Nash and Luke Wells made a positive start, adding 72 in 21 overs, but after lunch Notts bowled with more control on a pitch still offering good pace and carry, and during the afternoon session Sussex were restricted to 85 runs and lost both openers.

Nash (22) was bowled off the inside edge when Shahzad cut one back during a good spell down the slope and Wells mis-timed a drive to mid-off on 59 to give left-arm spinner Samit Patel the first of two wickets.

Skipper Ed Joyce also hit 59 before falling victim to Gurney while Yardy contributed 46 before losing his off-stump to Shahzad.

Rory Hamilton-Brown (10) and Luke Wright (14) also reached double figures before Brown (29 not out) and Jordan (21 not out) batted positively against a tiring attack at the death, Brown hitting three boundaries off one over from Paul Franks.
