Ben Stokes steered Durham to a two-wicket win over Lancashire in the sides' Specsavers County Championship Division One clash in Southport.

Stokes, included in the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford on Friday, hit 36 from 43 balls as the visitors reached their victory target of 247 in 77.2 overs.

Durham suffered a wobble, slipping from 170-2 to 195-7 after Keaton Jennings (82) and Jack Burnham (52) were dismissed in successive overs.

But Adam Hickey (21no) helped Stokes ensure Tom Smith's excellence with the ball - the seamer taking 5-25 from 16 overs - was in vain and lift Durham up to second in the table, 13 points behind Middlesex with a game in hand.

Stokes was run out with four runs still required having clubbed Simon Kerrigan for a brace of sixes, leaving tailender Chris Rushworth to strike the match-winning boundary off Kyle Jarvis.

Lancashire have slipped a spot to fourth in Division One having failed to win any of their last five Championship encounters - Steven Croft's men drawing four of those games as well as losing to Yorkshire.
