Yorkshire hold upper hand over Surrey after day two of County Championship clash

Yorkshire hold the advantage at the halfway stage of their Specsavers County Championship match against leaders Surrey at Scarborough.

The White Rose county advanced their first innings from 299-8 overnight to 337 all out before their score was boosted by the addition of five penalty runs.

By close on a day played out for large parts under overcast skies with a sea fret often enveloping the ground, Surrey had reached 219-7 from 72.1 overs.

Replying to Hampshire's first-innings 451, Lancashire closed on 140-3 as Davies posted his highest score of the Division One season so far.

However, Hampshire, boosted by a Rilee Rossouw century, will still be the happier at the halfway stage of a clash between two struggling teams.

The Essex captain marked his first game back after serving a two-match suspension for disciplinary issues by posting the first century by an Essex batsman in the Championship this season.

Ravi Bopara, with whom Ten Doeschate shared a record fifth-wicket stand of 294, was the second century-maker, finally departing for 118 shortly before the hosts declared on 517-5.

By stumps Somerset had reached 140-2, still 377 behind.

The home side declared their first innings on 499-9 and then made steady inroads to leave the visitors on 215-7, still 284 in arrears.

Joe Clarke top-scored for Worcestershire with 40 and the remainder of the top order all reached double figures before falling, with Harry Gurney taking 3-60.

Usman Khawaja became the first Glamorgan player to score a century in his first three County Championship matches for the club but Ben Duckett ensured Northamptonshire ended day two on top in Cardiff. GLAMORGAN v NORTHANTS SCORECARD

Northants opener Duckett smashed an unbeaten 111 from 123 deliveries as he guided the visitors to 169 without loss at the close - a sizeable second-innings lead of 196.

Khawaja's 103 ensured he surpassed the two consecutive hundreds achieved by Javed Miandad in 1980 and Shaun Marsh, earlier this season, with the Australian adding to his centuries against Warwickshire and Derbyshire.

The left-hander brought up his century from 138 deliveries, striking 16 fours and two sixes, before he was caught at fine leg by Richard Levi off Brett Hutton for 103 as Glamorgan were dismissed for 254, 27 runs behind in the first innings.

Durham put forward a resilient response to Warwickshire's total of 424 to leave their Division Two contest in the balance after day two at Emirates Riverside. DURHAM v WARWICKSHIRE SCORECARD

Jonathan Trott continued his fine form from the opening day to remain unbeaten on 170 as the visitors were able to record a potent score, with Matt Salisbury and Chris Rushworth both notching four wickets.

Durham were solid in their reply as Tom Latham and Cameron Steel put on 96 for the first wicket. Oliver Hannon-Dalby struck twice, but Steel and Graham Clark were unbeaten as the home side closed on 138-2.

Kent all-rounder Grant Stewart blasted a maiden first-class century from only 71 balls to leave Middlesex with a mountain to climb at the mid-point of their day-night County Championship clash. KENT v MIDDLESEX SCORECARD

Stewart, who starred with the ball by taking a career-best 6-22 to help dismiss Middlesex for 56 in their first innings, clattered 13 fours and five sixes as he and last man Ivan Thomas added 100 for Kent's 10th wicket - to which Thomas contributed a single.

Facing a mammoth victory target of 467, Middlesex eventually got to bat again in the twilight at 8.35pm and reached 22-2 at stumps.

Tony Palladino led a Derbyshire fightback before Leicestershire's bowlers regained control at the end of the second day of the day-night County Championship Division Two match at Derby. DERBYSHIRE v LEICESTERSHIRE SCORECARD

The 34-year-old took four for 62 as Leicestershire slipped from 168-1 to 297 all out with skipper Paul Horton top-scoring with 88.

But the visitors exploited helpful bowling conditions under the County Ground lights to make early inroads as Derbyshire closed on 43-3, nine runs behind.
