The England seamer, whose 70 Championship wickets last season helped Durham win the Division One title, has committed to his home county for a further two years.
Last season was magnificent, and to play a part in such an amazing team effort is something that will stay with me for a long time.
"I am obviously delighted," said Onions, who made his debut as a 21-year old a decade ago.
"Last season was magnificent, and to play a part in such an amazing team effort is something that will stay with me for a long time.
"I still get an enormous sense of pride playing for my local county and, with the crop of young players coming through, I'm confident we can have lots of success in the future. These are exciting times at Durham, and it's great to be a part of it all."
Durham head coach Jon Lewis said: "Graham's contribution to the success of Durham Cricket cannot be underestimated.
"His bowling record speaks for itself, but he is also a key figure in the dressing room and the example he sets the younger bowlers in particular is invaluable.
"To have someone of Graham's stature in our squad for the next few seasons will be a massive asset."
Onions has played nine Test matches for England, the last of them against West Indies in the summer of 2012.
