Hampshire's injury crisis has deepened with the news that Fidel Edwards faces an extended spell on the sidelines with a broken ankle.
The West Indian fast bowler, one of Hampshire's heroes last season when they fought off relegation from Division One, was hurt while playing football before the last day of their clash with champions Yorkshire at Headingley.
Edwards spent Wednesday night in a Leeds hospital but he will need further consultations before the length of his absence can be confirmed.
Coach Dale Benkenstein told the Southern Daily Echo: "We were only 45 seconds away from the end of the (football) game when Fidel went to kick the ball.
"I was just about to get the mitts on for fielding practice when his foot got stuck in the turf, and all his weight went over on it. There was no one near him. It was a really freakish fall, and there was a loud crack."
He is the second front-line Hampshire bowler to be injured in the first two weeks of the County Championship season, with Reece Topley having been ruled out for up to two months with a broken hand he suffered while batting against Warwickshire.
They also lost two more bowlers during the Yorkshire match, left-armer Chris Wood suffering a knee injury and spinner Liam Dawson being struck down by an abdominal issue.
