Matt Renshaw's third Specsavers County Championship century in eight innings for Somerset was the feature of a closely-fought opening day of the match with leaders Nottinghamshire at Taunton.
The Australian left-hander hit 106 off 171 balls, with 12 fours and two sixes, before becoming a third victim for off-spinner Matthew Carter as the hosts closed the day 307-7 after winning the toss.
Renshaw, playing in his final home Championship match due to an Australia A tour call-up in August, has scored 411 runs in Division One for Somerset at an average of 58.7.
Skipper Tom Abell contributed 57 and Steve Davies 59 not out, while Carter was the most successful Notts bowler, taking 4-81. SCORECARD
Rory Burns produced a near-flawless century against Hampshire as Surrey recovered from an early blip to dominate a truncated day one at the Ageas Bowl.
Captain Burns reached an unbeaten 109 by the close of play to boost the visitors to 216-3 after opting to bat first.
Mark Stoneman is aiming to reclaim his England Test spot from Keaton Jennings in the coming weeks, but only faced two balls on this occasion.
The opener held his bat out to a Fidel Edwards away seamer and found Jimmy Adams at second slip, with Stoneman still yet to pass 30 this season. SCORECARD
It was honours even after an enthralling opening day in the match between Lancashire and champions Essex at Old Trafford.
Lancashire slipped to 59-5 nine balls after lunch, as swing and some variable bounce aided their visitors.
They closed on 297-9 from 96 overs thanks to half-centuries for Jordan Clark and Shiv Chanderpaul and a late counter-attacking 41 from Graham Onions. SCORECARD
A career-best 5-29 from Warwickshire leg-spinner Josh Poysden continued Glamorgan's batting struggles on the opening day of their Division Two match at Edgbaston.
The Welsh county chose to bat, aiming to at least double their haul of just three batting points collected from their first four games.
But they added just one more as, on a slow pitch, they were bowled out for 220 after Poysden, playing his first Championship game of the season, dismantled the lower order.
The total looks well under par, although Glamorgan fought back well in the last session, removing both Warwickshire openers to leave the home side on 24-2 at the close. SCORECARD
Sean Dickson became the first Kent player to register a hundred in the County Championship this season as Gloucestershire's bowlers were made to toil in Bristol.
Translating his impressive one-day form into runs in the red-ball format, the South African top-scored with 117 to help the Division Two promotion contenders to close on 297-4 at the end of day one.
Gloucestershire stuck to their task in the field on a hot day and fought back in the final session, taking three wickets to partially redress the balance. SCORECARD
Derbyshire emerged from a dramatic opening day against Durham with a 79-run lead after 18 wickets fell at the Riverside.
Duanne Olivier produced a fine performance with the ball, claiming figures of 5-20 as the hosts were bowled out for just 96.
Durham responded as Chris Rushworth, Nathan Rimmington, Josh Coughlin and Matt Salisbury each claimed two wickets, but they could not stop the visitors edging day one, as Derbyshire ended 175-8. SCORECARD
Zak Chappell claimed a maiden first-class five-wicket haul as Leicestershire shaded the first day at Wantage Road, bowling Northamptonshire out for 204 before going to the close on 64-3.
Chappell, playing his first County Championship match of the season, took 6-44 with the bulk of his work done in a fiery spell after lunch. SCORECARD
