Mumbai splashed out £385,000 to secure the services of the Lancashire and England wicketkeeper-batsman in 2016 and, given the way he has so frequently dismantled bowling attacks in recent years, it is easy to see why.
Here we look at five of Buttler's finest innings in limited overs cricket…
55 not out, Nottinghamshire v Somerset, T20 semi-final - August 14, 2010
Buttler broke into the Somerset first team at the end of the 2009 season and his talent was clear from the outset. Indeed, less than a year later, aged just 19, he was instrumental in them reaching the domestic T20 final.
Arriving at the crease with Somerset 107-5 in the 14th over, Buttler smashed six fours and two sixes on his way to an unbeaten 55, off just 23 balls. It proved crucial as Somerset snuck into the final, beating Notts by three runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Six years on and Buttler was an established England international. He had also left Somerset for Lancashire in time for the 2014 season, although an England Test call-up later that year has limited his appearances for the county.
However, when he has been available, Buttler has done plenty to endear himself to the Lancashire fans, never more so than in last summer's Roses clash at Headingley in the T20 Blast. Having been set 186 to win, Lancashire sent Buttler in at four with the score at 82-2 in the 11th over and that become 89-3 in the 13th as Ashwell Prince departed.
Yorkshire looked well on their way to victory but Buttler had other ideas. With Ashley Giles' side requiring 32 from the final two overs, he hammered three huge sixes and two fours before scrambling a single off the final ball to seal the win and end on 71 from 35 deliveries.

Four days later and Buttler was at it again, this time for England, as Eoin Morgan's side banished the memories of a disastrous World Cup campaign and ushered in an exciting new era of limited overs cricket for England.
A Joe Root century had already laid the foundations for a big England score when Buttler walked out to the middle at 180-4. However, when Ben Stokes and Sam Billings were dismissed soon afterwards, the situation looked precarious at 202-6 with 20 overs still to bat.
Many would have taken the safe, steady approach, but not Buttler. He set about taking the attack to the Kiwi bowlers and when he departed for a 77-ball 129, that included 13 fours and five maximums, England were 379-7. They would go on to score over 400 for the first time in ODI cricket before bowling New Zealand out for just 198.

A summer of struggles followed for Buttler in the Test arena, resulting in him losing his place to Jonny Bairstow for the Pakistan series in the UAE. His response though was emphatic.
With England going well at 194-2 in the fourth ODI, the 25-year-old was sent in for the final 14 and a half overs to ensure the runs continued to flow. He did not disappoint. Buttler sent the ball to all parts, hitting 18 boundaries in all.
Of those boundaries, eight were sixes, including three in four balls to bring up his ton off just 46 deliveries - the fastest ever by an England player, beating his own record. He finished unbeaten on 116, setting England on their way to a series-clinching triumph.

Finally, to the top T20 score he surpassed with his IPL efforts for Mumbai. Before that knock, many had questioned Buttler's move up to open following five fairly low scores, but his previous best was also actually made at the top of the order.
Opening the batting in a T20I for the first time - filling in for the absent Alex Hales - Buttler helped lead England to a comfortable eight-wicket win chasing 141, even with the third-ball loss of his partner Jason Roy.
Mere months earlier Buttler had cracked an unbeaten 66 to against Sri Lanka, securing a World T20 semi-final berth, and punished the same attack again, this time for seven further runs - striking three fours and four sixes.
