Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to bowl; Will Gidman claimed two wickets with the new ball before bad light, and then heavy rain, wiped out play for the day.
With the final ball of his first over he had Paul Horton caught behind for a duck, Gareth Roderick taking a one-handed catch above his head.
Horton clearly felt the ball had diverted off a pad and walked slowly off, shaking his head.
Worse was to follow for Lancashire in Gidman's next over as Ashwell Prince had his middle stump uprooted, also without scoring.
That was as good as it got for the home side as Luis Reece (12no) and Karl Brown (20no) put on 27 for the third wicket in quick time, Brown unfurling two glorious cover drives among his five fours.
Lancashire are already guaranteed promotion and are able to clinch the Division Two title with victory this week.
Only Northamptonshire, 36 points behind heading into the penultimate round, can still catch Lancashire, who were relegated in 2012 a year after winning the County Championship title.
