With all 10 wickets evenly distributed amongst five bowlers, the home side managed to dismiss their opponents for 207, a first innings deficit of 67.
Samit Patel was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-4 off his eight overs, including six maidens, while Luke Fletcher, Harry Gurney, Paul Franks and Ajmal Shahzad also took two wickets apiece.
Gary Wilson and Gareth Batty ensured that the follow-on was comfortably avoided for the visitors as they added 81 together, before Patel dismissed them both either side of the tea interval.
Wilson was caught behind by Riki Wessels when on 49, attempting to cut - and the same combination accounted for the Surrey captain, as Batty (41) charged towards the spinner and was comprehensively stumped after being beaten through the air.
Surrey's last two wickets mustered enough runs to warrant a batting bonus point, with last man Jade Dernbach making 15 before holing out to Franks off Shahzad's bowling.
Batting again, late in the day, Notts then lost Alex Hales to a ball from Stuart Meaker that was inside-edged back onto his stumps as they closed day two with their second innings on 24-1, an overall lead of 91.
Earlier, Dernbach had taken only three deliveries to wrap up the Notts first innings, trapping Harry Gurney lbw for six, with the hosts having added only one run to their overnight 273-9.
