Amla tops the batting rankings in both Test and one-day internationals and will make his debut against Durham on 22 August.
The 30-year-old will be available for Surrey's six remaining games in the LV=County Championship as they look to retain their place in Division One of the competition.
Amla replaces his international team-mate JP Duminy, who will play for Hyderabad Sunrisers in the Champions League T20 next month.
Amla has previously played for Essex and Nottinghamshire but is now relishing the opportunity to turn out for Surrey.
"It is a great pleasure and honour to have been asked by (director of cricket) Alec Stewart to play for Surrey County Cricket Club," he said.
"The Kia Oval holds a lot of fond memories for me personally. I look forward to returning there this year and hopefully enjoying similar success."
Stewart admitted he was delighted to secure the services of Amla.
"I'm very pleased to have secured the services of Hashim Amla, unquestionably a world-class batsman, for the last six games in the LV= County Championship," he said.
"I would like to thank Hashim and Cricket South Africa for the excellent communication and professional manner which has enabled us to complete this deal."
