Worcestershire seamer Chris Russell celebrated his first senior appearance for two years with figures of 3-40 on the opening day of the two-day tour game against South Africa at New Road.
Russell accounted for Jacques Rudolph (7), Alviro Petersen (10) and Albie Morkel (50) before the Proteas declared at 237-9.
AB de Villiers, who was captaining the side as Graeme Smith has returned home for a flying visit prior to the second Test after becoming a father for the first time, top scored with 80.
De Villiers kept wicket during the first Test win over England at The Oval but handed the gloves to Thami Tsolekile for this match.
He received good support from Albie Morkel and Vernon Philander (40no) before Dale Steyn struck twice with the new ball to reduce Worcestershire to 4-2 in reply.
The Pears recovered to 70-3 by stumps thanks to Matt Pardoe's 40 not out.
