Heavy overnight showers led to a noon inspection at the Nevill Ground, where Leicestershire had hoped to improve on their disappointing overnight position of 74-4, but umpires Peter Hartley and Steve Gale decided there could be no play before lunch.
Tireless work by the ground staff made conditions fit for play by 2.10pm when both sets of players and the officials emerged from the pavilion.
The fielders were taking up their positions when the heavens opened once again leaving the umpires with little alternative but to call things off for the day at 2.35pm.
