Darren Stevens' counter-attacking half-century earned Kent a third batting point on a lively first day of their County Championship Division Two game at Glamorgan.

The veteran all-rounder was one of four visiting batsmen to pass 50 as Kent were bowled out for 309 before Glamorgan closed on 65-4 in reply.

The top order laid the groundwork for what should have been a big score as Rob Key (94), Sam Northeast (56) and Sean Dickson (54) helped Kent to 230-3.

But the final seven wickets went for just 79 and but for Stevens, who made 64 of the 71 runs scored during his time at the crease, it would have been worse still.

The 39-year-old's half-century was his 65th in first-class cricket and came off 61 balls, with 10 fours and a six.

Michael Hogan (4-51) was the pick of the bowlers for Glamorgan, who lost openers James Kettleborough and Jeremy Lawlor in the first two overs, the former one of two Matt Coles victims.

Wickets were harder to come by in Division Two's other game as Essex closed day one at Derbyshire on 360-6.

Teenage opener Dan Lawrence hit 15 fours in his 87, but it was a sixth-wicket stand of 145 between Ryan ten Doeschate (88) and Mark Pettini (70 not out) that took Essex to within sight of maximum batting points.

Ten Doeschate was eventually caught off England hopeful Mark Footitt, whose left-arm seam also yielded the wickets of Nick Browne and Jesse Ryder.
