Umpires Steven Garratt and Tim Robinson brought proceedings to a premature end at 4pm after Somerset had overcome the early loss of captain Marcus Trescothick to reach 70-1.
Nottinghamshire had earlier added 51 to their overnight total in 10 overs thanks to some big hitting from Luke Fletcher, who made 58 and was well supported by Harry Gurney (22).
The visitors lost Ajmal Shahzad, who could not add to his overnight score of 35, to the fourth ball of the morning when he was bowled by Peter Trego (3-61).
Harry Gurney was dropped by Craig Meschede at long leg soon after - a mistake he made Somerset pay for as he added 51 for the last wicket alongside Fletcher, who was last man out when he tried to hook Jamie Overton (3-67).
Somerset found runs hard to come by in their response and after four consecutive maiden overs Trescothick (2) was caught by Steven Mullaney at third slip after pushing forward to slip.
Rain caused an early lunch and the loss of 12 overs, and when the players returned Chris Jones (37 not out) and Nick Compton (31no) saw off the new ball bowlers to get the scoreboard ticking over.
The second wicket pair took the total to 70 off 27 overs when the heavens opened again and the players were forced off the field.
