Yorkshire struck twice late on to ensure that their rain-hit LV= County Championship clash with rivals Lancashire is finely poised heading into day two.
Heavy showers meant there was no play before 4.45pm at Headingley on Sunday, with the opening day's play restricted to 28 overs as a result.
After the enforced delay Lancashire openers Paul Horton (48 not out) and Luis Reece (23) put on an opening stand of 70 before Yorkshire hit back to make it 87-2 at the close of play.
Tim Bresnan and Liam Plunkett grabbed the late wickets for high-flying Yorkshire, who are attempting to win their first four-day Roses match in 12 years.
Elsewhere in Division One, Samit Patel and James Taylor put on a 192-run partnership for the fourth wicket as Nottinghamshire set a first-innings total of 377 against Durham at Trent Bridge.
Patel was dismissed for the agonising total of 99 while Taylor hit 88 to help the hosts recover from a disastrous start that had left them reeling on 29-3.
England duo Stuart Broad of Nottinghamshire and Ben Stokes of Durham were both in action, returning from knee and hand injuries respectively with varying success.
Stokes took 3-70 with the ball, including the vital scalps of both Patel and Taylor, but Broad was less influential as he was dismissed for a duck.
Patel, whose 99 came in 141 balls and included 13 fours and a six, was dismissed just one run short of his century when he was caught by Gareth Breese off Stokes.
Having negotiated 277 balls together, Taylor then fell exactly the same way 14 balls later with the score 232-5. Chris Read took the innings on with an unbeaten 59 before last man Andre Adams was caught in the final over to wrap up an intriguing opening day. Gavin Main (3-72) and Usman Arshad (3-71) finished with similar figures to Stokes.
Somerset duo Nick Compton and James Hildreth's unbroken 132-run opening stand helped the only unbeaten side left in Division One to 237-3 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
The pair joined forces just after tea with the visitors on 15-3 yet, after biding their time during a slow scoring period, Compton and Hildreth both looked at ease to give Somerset the first batting point on offer.
They had both reached 72 at stumps after former England opener Marcus Trescothick had followed up last week's hundred against Durham with 53 prior to tea.
Heavy rain in the Birmingham area on Saturday had left the Edgbaston outfield saturated and meant no play was possible before lunch.
