Consistent rain wiped out the morning session but it appeared a mid-afternoon start could be possible when conditions brightened up.
Umpires Michael Gough and Alex Wharf held an initial inspection but before they could take a second look 30 minutes later, the rain had closed in again. Play was finally called off at 4.15pm.
Essex have now lost a total of 277 overs in LV= County Championship cricket at home this year, though that is more than half of the amount at the same stage in 2012.
Kent had been due to resume on 214-5 in their first innings, meaning they held a narrow lead after bowling out their hosts on the opening day for 212.
Darren Stevens will resume again with 91 to his name alongside Geraint Jones (12 not out) and they have a further 27 overs to add to their current match tally of one batting bonus point.
Essex will also hope to bag some extra points, though it seems any hope of a positive outcome to the match will rely on the captains coming to an agreement over declarations to set up a final-day run chase.
