Kumar Sangakkara hit a brilliant century for Surrey on day one of their County Championship Division One match against Somerset.

After Arun Harinath (nine) was dismissed early on by Craig Overton (1-87), the Sri Lankan came in and dominated proceedings, reaching his hundred from just 94 balls at the Oval.

Rory Burns stayed with Sangakkara and made 80 before being caught and bowled by Roelof van der Merwe (1-61).

Sangakkara was eventually dismissed by Tim Groenewald (2-68) for 171 but England limited-overs star Jason Roy (85) showed his credentials in the longer form of the game, reaching his half-century and falling just 15 short of a ton as the hosts finished on 394-5.

Yorkshire ended a rain-affected day one on 177-4 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, with Gary Ballance making 50 not out.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Yorkshire found themselves in a spot of bother at 85-4 with last week's double centurion Jonny Bairstow (20) among those back in the hutch, bowled by Chris Woakes (1-35).

However, Ballance and Jack Leaning went about rebuilding the innings either side of a rain delay, both men finishing unbeaten on exactly 50 as they put on 92 for the fifth wicket before bad light brought about a premature end to the day's play.

Meanwhile, Middlesex's top order shared the runs between them as they finished on 358-7 at stumps against Durham at Chester-le-Street.

Dawid Malan top-scored with 74 while there were also half-centuries for Nick Gubbins (60) and captain Adam Voges (50).

The latter was dismissed by Ben Stokes (2-66), the England all-rounder one of five different wicket-takers for Durham, who also had James Harris lbw late on to bring about the close of play.

Paul Stirling will resume on 41 not out for Middlesex.
