Chris Woakes scored a magnificent century to rescue Warwickshire against Nottinghamshire on day one of their Specsavers County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge.

England international Woakes, batting at No 7, made 121, while No 9-batsman Keith Barker also hit a superb ton as the visitors recovered from 117-6 to reach 372-9 at the close of play.

Warwickshire made a disastrous start to the match and soon lost openers Varun Chopra (3) and Ian Westwood (1) to Jackson Bird (3-81) and Luke Fletcher (3-70) respectively, inside the first eight overs of the match.

Fletcher then removed Laurie Evans for just four and also had Sam Hain trapped lbw for a duck to leave the visitors in real trouble on 17-4.

Tim Ambrose was the next to fall after adding just 14 more to the total, but a 57-run partnership between Woakes and former England international Jonathan Trott restored some stability to the innings.

Trott was eventually caught by Brett Hutton off the bowling of Bird for 68, while Rikki Clarke made only nine before being dismissed by Samit Patel (1-29).

However, a magnificent 167-run partnership between Woakes and Barker helped the visitors pass 300.

Woakes finally nicked one through to wicketkeeper Chris Read off the bowling of Bird, but Barker continued to score freely and made 113 before being removed by Harry Gurney (1-63) just before the close of play.

WORCESTER, ENGLAND - MAY 25: Durham batsman Scott Borthwick in action

Elsewhere, Scott Borthwick hit his 13th first-class century to help Durham reach a commanding total on day one against Lancashire.

Borthwick made 134 before being dismissed by Simon Kerrigan (1-54) to help his side reach 341-6 at the close of play at Chester-le-Street.

Lancashire are the in-form side in domestic cricket this season and made early inroads after being asked to bowl first - Tom Bailey (4-79) picking up the wickets of Keaton Jennings (1) and Mark Stoneman (31) inside the first 11 overs of the match.

But Borthwick then shared a third-wicket stand of 88 with Jack Burnham (44) to help the hosts recover from their two early losses.

Bailey ended that partnership with his third wicket of the afternoon shortly before Kyle Jarvis (1-64) had Michael Richardson caught by Liam Livingstone for just one.

Durham captain Paul Collingwood arrived at the crease and added a further 123 runs with Borthwick before the latter fell to the spin of Kerrigan an hour before the close of play.

Collingwood then passed his half century, ably assisted by Ryan Pringle, who made 25 before becoming Bailey's fourth victim of the day.

However, it will be the home side who finish the day the happier of the two sides, with veteran Collingwood still at the crease on 85 not out.

Marcus Trescothick

Marcus Trescothick, Chris Rogers, James Hildreth and Jim Allenby all made half-centuries as Somerset dominated the opening day's play against defending champions Yorkshire at Taunton.

After electing to field first, Yorkshire made a strong start and soon had the wicket of opener Tom Abell for just eight - bowled by Steven Patterson (1-57).

However, an 148-run stand between Trescothick and captain Rogers helped the home side reach 171-1 before the former England opener was caught and bowled on 97 by Adil Rashid (2-70).

England international spinner Rashid then removed Rogers for 91 as the visitors threatened a late-afternoon fightback.

But half-centuries from Hildreth (68no) and Allenby (51) ensured the hosts would start day two with a commanding total of 342-4, despite the latter falling to Will Rhodes (1-46) late on.

Tom Curran

Meanwhile, Surrey bowler Tom Curran took 3-80 to restrict Middlesex to 298-7 on day one at The Oval.

The away side's opening pair of Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins made a confident start to the match and put on 126 runs for the first wicket before Robson fell to Gareth Batty (2-60) for 53.

Gubbins was caught off the bowling of Curran soon after, just short of his century on 91. However, that dismissal did nothing to stop the flow of runs as Dawid Malan (58) also reached his half-century before being removed by James Burke (2-56).

The visitors looked well set for a massive total on 238-3 but then suffered a middle-order collapse which saw them lose four wickets for just 51 runs.

Adam Voges (47) and John Simpson (12) were both trapped lbw, while Curran then took the wickets of Paul Stirling (7) and Ollie Rayner (6) to help the home side end the first day on top.
