Brian Rose stood down from the position at the end of the domestic summer and the search has been on to find his replacement.
Justin Langer is one name being mentioned, with the former Australia Test batsman having spent a highly-successful period at Taunton from 2006 to 2009.
The 41-year-old is currently employed as Australia's assistant coach but did visit his former county during the recent summer.
"We have had a number of applicants from all over the world and we are in the process of reviewing those, which will lead to some formal interviews," Lavender told the Western Daily Press.
"Those will take place in the next three to four weeks, after which we will be able to take a decision that is best for the club. But we have not made a decision at this stage."
Somerset have finished runners-up in the Friends Life t20 for the past three seasons, while they are yet to win the County Championship title in their history.
