Jimmy Adams and James Vince both hit centuries as Hampshire took a firm grip on their Specsavers County Championship clash with Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Opener Adams plundered 144 and Vince added 104 from just 129 balls to help the visitors to 361 for four by the close on day one after they had won the toss and elected to bat.

Having seen their side reduced to 71 for two by brothers Sam and Tom Curran, the pair added 161 in 35 overs.

Warwickshire too mounted a fightback after losing openers Will Porterfield and Andrew Umeed for just 19 against Middlesex at Edgbaston.

Jonathan Trott fell one short of a half-century and 20-year-old Matt Lamb hit 51, but it was Rikki Clarke who shone with 83 before he was trapped in front by James Harris in the final over of the day with the home side having reached 302 for seven.

Liam Plunkett was Yorkshire's star as Somerset were dismissed for just 268 at Scarborough.

Plunkett claimed four for 73 from his 21 overs and was well supported by Tim Bresnan, Ben Coad and Adil Rashid with two apiece on day one at North Marine Road.

However, the home side did not have it all their own way and reached the close having lost Adam Lyth, Alex Lees and Peter Handscomb for just 42 runs, thanks in large part to Craig Overton's two for 17 off seven overs.

In Division Two, it proved an even more eventful day at Cheltenham as a staggering 25 wickets fell inside 91 overs with Glamorgan and Gloucestershire both in disarray with the bat.

David Payne's three for 37 helped to dismiss the visitors for just 117 in 32.1 overs with Aneurin Donald's 39 the most notable contribution.

Gloucestershire fared little better when they attempted to capitalise with Kiwi Kieran Noema-Barnett top-scoring with 34 as Michael Hogan, Timm van der Gugten and Marchant de Lange each taking three wickets to restrict the home side to 141.

But Liam Norwell blasted out three early second-innings wickets to leave Glamorgan on 59 for five at the close, just 35 ahead.

South African Sean Dickson found the going considerably more comfortable as he smashed a career-best unbeaten 210 in partnership with Joe Denly, who finished on 143 not out to leave Kent in a commanding position against Northamptonshire.

Dickson became the first Kent batsman to post double centuries as his first two three-figure scores for the county as the home side finished on 434 for one at Beckenham.

There was a century too for Matt Critchley in Derbyshire's 332 for nine against Durham at Chesterfield.

Critchley finally went leg before to Matty Potts, who claimed three for 65, for 102, but Billy Godleman is still there on 79.
