Steve Finn boosted his hopes of an Ashes call-up and Middlesex's chances of avoiding relegation from the Specsavers County Championship by taking 8-79 in a 36-run win over Lancashire.

Finn's haul skittled Lancashire for 184 at Lord's as reigning champions Middlesex, who had dropped into the bottom two last week, completed a three-day victory to move up to third in the table.

Ashes hopeful Haseeb Hameed fractured his finger at Lord's a week before England's squad to face Australia is due to be announced.

Middlesex will guarantee survival next week if they win their final match of the season at seventh-placed Somerset, who closed day three at Surrey on 113-4 in their second innings to trail by 51.

Kumar Sangakkara took his score for the hosts to 157, having secured his eighth hundred in 13 Championship innings last evening, while Rikki Clarke hit 50 and Peter Trego took five wickets in Surrey's 433 all out.

Sixth-placed Yorkshire are in danger of the drop and will have to work hard for victory against already relegated Warwickshire at Headingley after slipping to 56-3 chasing 175 - Warwickshire were dismissed for 251 earlier in the day, Jonathan Trott top scoring with 59.

Dan Lawrence scored 101 as Essex moved into a 69-run lead against Hampshire at The Ageas Bowl with five wickets remaining - Fidel Edwards ousting Lawrence and Ravi Bopara (57).

Nottinghamshire will require a further 207 runs on day four against Northamptonshire for a victory that would seal a return to Division One after progressing to 207-3 in the 25.3 overs possible on day three.

Benny Howell (163) and James Bracey (156) put on 240 for the second wicket as Gloucestershire replied to Glamorgan's 442 all out with 399-8 declared, before reducing the Welsh county to 63-1 in their second dig.

Durham reached 5-0 chasing 264 to win after bowling out Sussex for 302 - Sussex's Luke Wells backed up his first-innings century with 58, while Phil Salt made 72 before being bowled by Keaton Jennings.

There was no possible play at Chesterfield, meanwhile, with a wet outfield wiping out Derbyshire versus Kent for the third day running.
