James Vince and Liam Dawson starred with the bat as Hampshire posted 274-5 on the first day of their Division Two clash with Glamorgan at Cardiff.
Vince, who has been struggling for runs in recent weeks and averages just 28 this season, returned to top form with a fluent 80 off 131 balls, whilst Dawson dug in to score a gritty 69no off 184.
Skipper Jimmy Adams (47) won the toss and opted to bat and he and Michael Carberry (31) gave Hampshire a solid start, putting on 76 for the first wicket.
Carberry was the first to fall, caught by Stewart Walters off spinner Dean Cosker just before lunch.
Walters was again in the right place to pouch Adams off Will Owen, and when Neil McKenzie was bowled by Michael Hogan for 11, Hampshire were 118-3.
But Vince and Dawson stopped the rot, and put on 132 for the fourth wicket, enjoying themselves in the sun on a good batting strip.
Hampshire had clearly decided Hogan - the prolific Australian fast bowler - was to be seen off. He was the man to break the partnership, trapping Vince in front for 80 and his 23 overs cost just 44 runs and included 10 maidens.
Jim Allenby then dismissed Sean Ervine for an eight-ball duck but Adam Wheater (14no) kept Dawson company until stumps.
