Glamorgan all-rounder Graham Wagg will miss his side’s upcoming matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup after suffering mild concussion on Friday.

Wagg was twice hit on the head while batting in Glamorgan’s final NatWest T20 Blast game against Gloucestershire, forcing him to retire hurt and leaving him unable to bowl.

The 32-year-old was forced to sit out the Welsh Dragons’ Royal London One-Day Cup opener against Nottinghamshire on Sunday and is also expected to miss the clash with Kent on Tuesday.

Wagg must now undergo return to play protocols and will be monitored by medical staff, with a decision then due to be made on whether he can return to action for Friday’s game with Essex at the SWALEC Stadium.

“We’ve got to err on the side of caution,” said Glamorgan physiotherapist Mark Rausa.

“It’s probably quite frustrating for Graham, but because of what we know about concussion and changes in brain chemicals, a secondary incident could lead to much more damaging prospects.

“Graham’s a very strong-minded and hard guy. If he’d been given the choice he probably would have wanted to stay on but, after a blow like that, as soon as you see any signs you’ve got to get them off.

“What he has to do is have regular assessments from a doctor or neurologist.

“Dr Rob Young will be seeing Graham a couple of times in the next week then we can start a return-to-play protocol.”
