Durham's Paul Coughlin continued his fine LV= County Championship Division One debut by taking three Lancashire wickets after scoring a superb 85 at Chester-le-Street.

Couglin, batting number 10, eventually was bowled by Tom Smith, with wicketkeeper Phil Mustard (70) then also out as Durham reached 338 in their first innings.

After a solid start in reply with 86 from Usman Khawaja, 46 from Alex Davies and Ashwell Prince's knock of 49, Lancashire's middle order failed to press on.

Coughlin took three wickets for 42 runs, with John Hastings and Ben Stokes also claiming three wickets each to help dismiss the visitors for 266.

By stumps, Durham had reached 16 without loss, a lead of 88.

Third-placed Middlesex moved into a lead of 333 on day the third day of their match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Notts had resumed at 258-4 four, still some 247 behind Middlesex's mammoth 505 first innings and suffered an early blow when Samit Patel could add just a two runs to his overnight 75 before he was dismissed by Toby Roland-Jones.

Tim Murtagh struck twice in as many balls to dismiss Notts captain Chris Read (32) and then Peter Siddle for a golden duck, and the hosts suddenly found themselves 333-7.

When Riki Wessels, 26 overnight, was eventually out for 71, his innings lasting just more than three hours, Middlesex finished off the tail at 392 to keep themselves more than 100 ahead.

Murtagh was the pick of the bowlers, with 6-93.

In reply, Siddle made more of an impact with the ball, taking two wickets as captain Chris Rogers (48) fell just short of a half-century.

However, after Joe Denly had been run out for 19, Middlesex pushed on with wicketkeeper John Simpson 44 not out and Paul Stirling 39no when play was finally ended for the day just after 7pm.

Three wickets from James Middlebrook helped bottom club Northamptonshire restrict Warwickshire to 274-4, with Sam Hain unbeaten on 87.

Resuming at 297-8, Robert Newton, 108 overnight, was Northamptonshire's last man out, having edged onto 114.

The home side, without a win so far, enjoyed some success in what was a steady Warwickshire innings, also underpinned by 69 from Jim Troughton.

The first day of the match between Sussex and Yorkshire at Arundel was hit by the weather.

Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow took some six catches as Sussex were pressing on at 300-9. Jon Lewis, batting number 10, had made an unbeaten 50 from just over an hour in the middle.

Sussex opener Luke Wells had earlier made a stubborn 74 before he was seventh man out, while England bowler Tim Bresnan claimed 3-71.
