Durham's Paul Coughlin continued his fine LV= County Championship Division One debut by taking three Lancashire wickets after scoring a superb 85 at Chester-le-Street.
Couglin, batting number 10, eventually was bowled by Tom Smith, with wicketkeeper Phil Mustard (70) then also out as Durham reached 338 in their first innings.
After a solid start in reply with 86 from Usman Khawaja, 46 from Alex Davies and Ashwell Prince's knock of 49, Lancashire's middle order failed to press on.
Coughlin took three wickets for 42 runs, with John Hastings and Ben Stokes also claiming three wickets each to help dismiss the visitors for 266.
By stumps, Durham had reached 16 without loss, a lead of 88.
