Mark Wood has been named in the England Lions squad to play a three-day match in Queensland as he steps up his return from injury.
The Durham paceman is stepping up his comeback from an ankle injury that saw him left out of the original squad and will play in the three-day game starting on Monday alongside two members of the current Ashes touring party in Tom Curran and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.
The 27-year-old has a long history of injury problems and has featured in just two of seven Tests since playing for England in the Champions Trophy this summer.
Wood has taken part in the first week of the Lions' training camp in Australia, and was one of the bowlers who helped to prepare England's batsmen in the nets ahead of their first Ashes Test.
Talking of his recovery, Wood said: "I've been building it up out here and my action feels good. It's just I've got no overs under my belt. So the more bowling training I can do in games the better."
Wood missed out on Ashes selection when the squad was named, but says that head coach Trevor Bayliss, national selector James Whitaker and director of cricket Andrew Strauss met him to say that he could still play a part in the battle for the urn.
Wood said: "They said that if I got my body right I'd still be in a position to have an impact in the series. So in the back of my mind I've always thought I've got a chance.
"But I'm not here to put any of the lads under pressure. You don't want anyone to get injured - I've had enough myself to know you don't want people to go through that. We'll just have to wait and see."
Wood is joined in the Lions squad by batsmen Tom Westley and Keaton Jennings, both of whom will also be looking to stake their claims for recalls to the Test side.
The Queensland team will be coached by former Australia seamer Andy Bichel and will feature bowler Ben Cutting, who has played four ODIs and seven T20Is for Australia.
England Lions XII to face Queensland: Jennings (capt), Gubbins, Westley, Foakes, Lawrence, Livingstone, Davies, Coughlin, Curran, Wood, Leach, Garton.
