India opener Sehwag, who went into the series under pressure following a lean run of form, laid the platform for his side to go on and post 323-4 with a typically aggressive 117 at the top of the order.
He and fellow opener Gautam Gambhir shared a scintillating 134-run partnership inside the opening 30 overs, only for Swann to check the home side's progress with four wickets later in the day.
The England off-spinner, who ended the day with 4-85, said after play: "It was a tough first session. We know Sehwag can bat like that and he was superb for the first two hours.
"It was important getting him out and I thought we bounced back very well in that second session. We fielded very well, better than we did in the first session, bowled better as a team and it was nice to get some wickets myself."
A shellshocked England went to lunch with India cruising on 120-0, but Swann revealed how a much-needed team talk at the break helped put the bleak situation into perspective.
He added: "We said we couldn't let the game drift away from us. We had to win that second session and I think we did that by being more disciplined, bowling straighter, and we got our rewards."
Speaking on the team gameplan ahead of day two, Swann said: "We need to take quick wickets in the morning. We need to keep them down to 400/450 and match or better that ourselves.
"India have got some quality spinners so we know that when we bat we are going to have to do it well."
