Panesar recorded career-best figures of 11-210 to set England on their way to a comprehensive victory at the Wankhede Stadium, which levels the four-match series with two Tests remaining.
The Sussex left-arm off-spinner combined brilliantly with Graeme Swann, with the duo claiming 19 of the 20 India wickets to fall.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the win, Swann said: "There was a lot of pressure on the guy coming in (Panesar). People were saying he should have played in the first Test and that he would have bowled them out.
"For Monty to come in and take his wickets like the way he did in the UAE last year is great testament to the way he practices and keeps going.
"I guess it helps when you bowl five hours every day in the nets - which not all of us do, but hats off to Monty, he was superb in this match.
"Monty and I hadn't won a match playing together before so he said to me before this Test match 'come on brother lets win one, let's do it' and I'm just so happy that we did."
Panesar added: "I felt bowling slightly quicker was the right thing to do because that pitch had already been used for a four-day match so there was plenty of turn and bounce there.
"Normally you don't get those type of pitches so the challenge for me will be when I get on a flatter deck, finding the right pace."
Panesar dismissed childhood hero Sachin Tendulkar twice in what could be the 'Little Master's final Test in front of his home fans.
"That's always going to be a great memory for me because the ball before I dropped my front arm and I was telling myself to get my action right, it clicked nicely and it's one to tell the grandchildren about," he added.
