Australia have a lead of 331 and will need to bowl England out for less on Monday to keep the series alive. A draw will see England retain the Ashes and the good news for the hosts is that the weather forecast is not good for Manchester.
Prior said that if the weather holds, England still have a great deal of work to do to get through the day.
"I think it's still a pretty good wicket, there'll be a lot of focus on the odd one that's bounced and a bit of spin there," he said.
"The key is getting through the new ball because the moment the ball goes soft it's a different story, it doesn't bounce as much and spins slower."
When it was put to Prior that his side could be a day away from retaining the Ashes, he warned: "Don't look too far ahead. It's a day away but it feels years away.
"It's another long day, another load of hard work, another load of cliches - taking one ball at a time, not getting ahead of ourselves. That's the mentality that's served us well and got us this far."
