England v India: Ben Stokes set to win recall for first Test at Trent Bridge
Last Updated: 02/07/14 4:40pm
Ben Stokes could win a recall when England's squad for the first Test against India is named this afternoon.
The Durham all-rounder was one of the few success stories during the Ashes whitewash in Australia but missed the start of the county season after breaking a bone in his hand punching a locker.
Stokes - overlooked for the Test series against Sri Lanka - has been in good form with the ball for Durham, taking a career best 10-121 during a recent game against Sussex.
And England seamer Stuart Broad is excited by the prospect of Stokes' return when the squad is announced live on Sky Sports News at 3pm.
Broad said: "Stokesy's a fantastic cricketer - really raw but really exciting, and the sort of guy you want in your side.
"I think he was asked to go and get some more overs under his belt, and he got a seven-for up at Durham so he'll be desperate to get in that side.
"It's great to hear an England player talking about exciting squads being announced - that's what you want. You want guys always pushing at the door to get in because that keeps players on their toes."
Stokes has increased competition for an all-rounder's role in the wake of Moeen Ali's encouraging start to Test cricket,
The Worcestershire batsman's unbeaten hundred almost saved England from a series defeat against Sri Lanka, and twice in as many Tests his off-spin removed the great Kumar Sangakkara.
Former England captain and Sky Sports commentator Michael Atherton said: "The selectors have got to ask themselves the question: is Moeen Ali the spinner? If he is they've got to have faith in him and bowl him.
"I think he looks alright - he's clearly not the finished article and he's not Graeme Swann. But if they're picking him as a spinner as well as someone who bats they've got to have faith in him and give him the ball."
Stay tuned to Sky Sports today - on television, mobile or PC - for news of England's squad. The first Test is live on Sky Sports 2 from 10am next Wednesday, July 9.
