England opener Sam Robson believes it is only a matter of time before captain Alastair Cook starts scoring runs freely once again at international level.
Cook has managed just 83 runs in his last five Test innings and pressure has intensified on the England captain after the draw with India extended his side’s winless streak to nine matches.
But Robson, who has scored 230 runs in the same period, insists Cook remains one of the best batsmen in the world and will find his form soon.
“He's been really good, he's relaxed. As captain, he's been really good to the young guys and to myself coming into the side,” Robson told Sky Sports News.
“Everyone’s been really supportive of him (during his dip in form). He’s scored 25 or so Test hundreds and he’s a world class player. He’s one of England’s best ever players there is no doubt about that.
“All the close followers of the game who know what they are talking about realise that as well.
“Runs are not very far away for him. It’s a tough game, it’s easy to get out and a few things haven’t gone his way in the last couple of games from what I can see.
“He's a really level character and things aren't necessarily happening as he would have like at the moment but I'm sure runs are around the corner for him."
Robson scored 59 in one innings against India last week and the Middlesex opener is confident England will return to winning ways soon.
He's a really level character and things aren't necessarily happening as he would have like at the moment but I'm sure runs are around the corner for him.
“Whilst we haven’t got a win under our belts everyone feels we are playing some pretty reasonable cricket, Robson said.
“Spirit and team morale has been really good, it’s a good environment and there is a really good feeling among the group in the short time that I have been involved.
“I think we all feel like we are on the right track and are not too far away from stringing some wins together.
“Hopefully if we can keep that up and string it altogether at the right time we can get a win under our belts and get stuck into this series.”
