Stuart Broad missed England's practice session on Wednesday as he went to see a specialist about his broken nose.

Broad suffered the nasty injury while batting in the fourth Investec Test against India at Old Trafford, when an upper edge from a quick Varun Aaron delivery went between the grille of his helmet.

The paceman has been cleared to play in the final Test at the Kia Oval, which starts on Friday, but speculation remains whether he will have to play in a mask or possibly wearing a splint to protect his nose.

Broad tweeted pictures of himself on Tuesday of masks worn by Batman and his most recent super villain opponent Bane, joking they were his two favourites so far.

Boyband looks

Team-mate Joe Root says it is vital Broad plays in the finale after showing his form in the first innings in Manchester, where he took 6-25 as India were bowled out for 152 on the opening day of what turned into an innings defeat.

Joe Root says that England have come together as a team and are confident ahead of the final Test of the summer against India.

Root said: "He's only just turned up at the ground and he's not got his normal boyband looks. It will be interesting to see how he pulls up over the next couple of days.

"You want all of your form players playing. To come out of the last game with six wickets it's going to be important to hopefully get him back in the side so fingers crossed he will be raring to go on Friday."

Should Broad not be passed fit, Steven Finn stands by for a return to the side after being named in an unchanged squad from the one successful at Old Trafford.

India captain MS Dhoni was also absent from his side's training session although team officials said it was nothing more than a rest day.
