Aussie fears over Tait

Australia are sweating over the fitness of Shaun Tait ahead of the Twenty20 World Championship.

Mixed news for Australia on the injury front

Australia are sweating over the fitness of paceman Shaun Tait ahead of September's Twenty20 World Championship. The 24-year-old quick underwent an operation on his bowling arm in June, and he has been unable to join the squad in their Twenty20 preparations since. Team-mate Brett Lee's recovery from ankle surgery is going well, but bowling coach Troy Cooley admits the worries over Tait's participation are increasing. "It's more or less a day-by-day prospect to try to get him up for this tournament," Cooley told AAP. "He only needs to bowl four overs a match in Twenty20, but common sense says every week that he's not bowling makes it a bit harder to get that workload under his belt. "Brett's been bowling at three-quarter pace though and everything is going to plan."

Regeneration

John Buchanan's side claimed their third successive World Cup triumph in the Caribbean at the end of April, but have undergone major changes since. Tim Neilsen is the new coach, while veterans Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn have all retired from the international arena. Batsman Michael Clarke knows the onus on the newer players to ensure the transition runs smoothly. "Some great players have gone, you can't replace stars like Warne and McGrath, but there are a lot of players in Australia who will see it as an opportunity," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how we go without those players and some fresh blood is always good." Australia begin their campaign against Zimbabwe on September 12, before taking on England ahead of the Super Eights stage.
