England's recent performances in New Zealand have given Australia encouragement after Alistair Cook's side drew the three-match series with the Kiwis 0-0.
The tourists had to bat out the final day of the first and third Tests to earn losing draws.
While Lyon admits England's struggles across the Tasman were good to see, he thinks Australia must concentrate on their own game ahead of the Ashes.
The Aussies are hardly in the best of shape themselves after slumping to a 4-0 Test whitewash in India - just weeks after England had beaten the same opponents on Indian soil.
Lyon told Sky Sports: "We worry about our own backyard and what we can do to hopefully make Australia play good cricket and bring the Ashes home."
While the Australia squad is young, Lyon believes they are progressing and will not fear playing England.
"We feel that we're heading in the right direction. It's a young group, it's a whole new culture starting again but we've got the confidence and we know we have got the skill to take it to the England."
