Lehmann was drafted in to replace Mickey Arthur just a couple of weeks before battle was due to commence between the old rivals, but Watson feels it will prove an inspired move.
The 32-year-old - who will open the batting for Australia along with Chris Rogers at Trent Bridge this week - says that Lehmann has made a big impression, with the Australian touring party quick to embrace his methods.
Indeed, despite the fact they head into the series as clear underdogs, the experienced all-rounder believes Australia could well spring a surprise on English soil this summer.
"Darren Lehmann has certainly brought in exactly who he is as a person," Watson told Sky Sports. "He's a fun-loving guy he certainly knows what's required to get the best out of himself as he did as a player, he's now doing as a coach.
"He's brought that into our team and I know that's exactly what was needed.
"It's been a lot of fun the last few weeks seeing how Darren Lehmann operates; I always loved playing with him and I certainly love playing under him as a coach.
"I think people are going to be surprised at how well we go, I'm very excited about our prospects here and what we're going to deliver.
"Hopefully we can be at our best throughout this Test series and show everyone what we're made of."
