England fast bowler Mark Wood has had a second operation on his left ankle.
The 26-year-old Durham seamer first had surgery after he was forced to leave England's winter tour of the United Arab Emirates.
He then pulled out of his intended comeback for Durham's second XI earlier this month following a return of pain in his ankle and, after seeing a consultant, it was decided he needed further surgery which will keep him on the sidelines for the first couple of months of the season.
Wood, who has made eight Test appearances, is therefore set to miss the three-Test series against Sri Lanka in May and June but could be back in contention for the series against Pakistan which starts on July 14.
A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board read: "Durham and England pace bowler Mark Wood has undergone surgery on his left ankle.
"Following successful surgery to the front of his left ankle in November, a further procedure was undertaken yesterday to address ongoing issues at the back of the ankle.
"Wood will now undertake a period of rehabilitation and begin a back-to-bowling programme before returning to competitive cricket later this summer."
