Shashank Manohar has resigned as president of India's cricket board and is now free to run for election as the next International Cricket Council chairman.
Manohar, currently chairman of the world governing body, is the front-runner to be elected to the post again in a ballot set to take place during the remainder of this month.
To fulfil the new constitutional criteria, however - introduced last year, largely at his behest - Manohar must not be linked to a national board.
The 58-year-old's decision to resign from his post with the Board of Control for Cricket in India was therefore anticipated.
The national administration continues beset by the recommendations of the Lodha Committee and instruction to reform following corruption scandals in the Indian Premier League.
A BCCI statement confirmed on Tuesday that Manohar was no longer in office.
It read: "The BCCI confirms that Mr Shashank Manohar has resigned from the post of President, BCCI.
"Manohar has also resigned as the BCCI representative on the International Cricket Council and the Asian Cricket Council.
"The BCCI places on record its deep appreciation of the immense contribution to Indian cricket made by Mr Manohar."
The result of the ballot to find the new ICC chairman is expected to be known by the end of this month.
