Sri Lanka reached 110-1 chasing a target of 370 at stumps on day four of the first Test against South Africa in Galle.
Kaushal Silva and Kumar Sangakkara shared an unbroken second-wicket stand 96 and Sri Lanka will resume on the final morning requiring a further 260 for victory.
South Africa declared for the second time in the match on 206-6 at tea after solid contributions from several of the top order.
Alviro Petersen (32), Faf du Plessis (37), AB de Villiers (51) and Quinton de Kock (36) all chipped in, while off-spinner Dilruwan Perera claimed 4-79.
South Africa seamer Dale Steyn, who claimed 5-54 in the first innings, struck in his second over of Sri Lanka's run chase to remove Upul Tharanga for 14.
But No 3 Sangakkara hit seven fours and a six to reach the close unbeaten on 58 - his 49th Test half-century - and received good support from Silva (37no).
