The first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa at Chittagong ended in a draw after days four and five were washed out by rain.

With eight defeats in a row against the No 1 side in the world, Bangladesh were well in the game, leading by 17 with South Africa having 10 second-innings wickets intact.

Rain had washed out the entire fourth day's play and some 50 overs were lost on the second and third days at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

South Africa, who scored 248 in the first innings, bowled out Bangladesh for 326 before making 61-0 in their second knock.

Both teams claimed they had the advantage, if play had been possible.

"Going into the fourth day I think we probably had a slight advantage, certainly with Bangladesh having to bat on the last day," South Africa captain Hashim Amla said.

"Had we even scored maybe even 250, it would have been a challenge for Bangladesh to go for it on the last day."

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said spin could have given them an advantage with the pitch deteriorating.

"They were trailing by 17 runs. They have to score runs at quick pace and, in doing so, they would be in danger to lose some quick wickets," he said.

"We've got four genuine spinners in our team. So we could have been in a dominating position."

Play now moves on to Mirpur for the second Test, which starts on Thursday morning.
