India have named former all-rounder Ravi Shastri as their new head coach.

Shastri, who was favourite for the vacant role, replaces Anil Kumble who resigned after India were beaten by Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy last month.

In a statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said: "Mr Shastri has been the team director in the past and brings with him a wealth of experience, both as player and as coach."

As well as Shastri's appointment, the BCCI have also named Zaheer Khan as the country's bowling consultant while Rahul Dravid will be the overseas batting consultant.

The BCCI added: "Mr Khan is a contemporary cricketer who assumed the mentoring role to a young fast bowling unit even during his playing days with India.

"His inputs will be of immense value to our young fast bowlers, who have shown tremendous potential in the last couple of years.

"As the Indian team is to play Test cricket overseas in the next two years, Rahul Dravid's expertise as batting consultant will be immensely helpful for youngsters.

"The Board would like to wish these gentlemen the very best and they along with the players together will take Indian cricket to new heights."

It's not the first time Shastri has been involved with managing the national side, having been India's director of cricket in 2014 and had applied for the head coach role in 2016, but missed out, with Kumble being appointed instead.

Shastri will now be in charge until the next World Cup in England in 2019.
