AB de Villiers has not fully recovered from an elbow injury and will miss South Africa's one-day international against Ireland on Sunday live on Sky Sports 3.

The South African skipper is hoping the extra rest will enable him to be fit for the forthcoming five-match series against Australia, which begins next week.

De Villiers missed the recent series with New Zealand due to the injury, which was the first time he has been sidelined since making his Proteas debut 12 years ago.

The 32-year-old batsman will need to pass a fitness test ahead of the visit of the Aussies and team manager Mohammed Moosajee said in a statement: "AB has been on a rigorous rehabilitation and treatment plan for the last six weeks.

"But he is still complaining of pain in the elbow region. We hope that the extra time will allow the injury to respond to treatment."

In his absence, Faf du Plessis will skipper the team in the one-off match against Ireland in Benoni, near Johannesburg. Rilee Rossouw has been added to the squad as batting cover.
