Abbott replaces the injured Wayne Parnell who picked up a groin injury in the second Test victory in Port Elizabeth.
Abbott - who is joining Hampshire as their overseas player this summer - is the leading wicket-taker in the South Africa's domestic four-day competition, with 22 wickets at an average 13.09 in five matches.
Quinton De Kock remains in the squad as the extra batting option cover.
Ryan McLaren returns to the squad having missed the second Test after suffering concussion in the first match at Centurion. And the former Kent man is more likely to replace Parnell in the team for the deciding Test which starts on Saturday.
Alviro Petersen could also return after he missed the second Test because of illness.
Australia will have concerns over Shaun Marsh, who picked up a pair in Port Elizabeth and now has six ducks in his last 11 Test innings.
A fit-again Shane Watson would likely replace him, though team management have said they will only select the all-rounder if he can bowl. If not, they may be tempted to give Phil Hughes another chance.
