The 32 year-old, who has taken 75 wickets in 25 Test matches, injured his shoulder during a warm-up game against Essex last week, in what was the opening match of Sri Lanka's tour of England and Ireland this summer.

The injury is not expected to keep Prasad out of the whole series and Sri Lanka head coach Graham Ford was confident that the bowler would return in time for either the second Test at Chester-le-Street on May 27, or the third and final Test at Lord's on June 9.

"We're hoping that we can get him bowling again pretty soon," Ford said. "Prasad has had a few tests and the specialist came to see him today.

"We'll have to build him up and get him bowling a number of overs in the nets to have him prepared potentially for the second or third Test."

Prasad took five wickets in the second innings against England at Headingley two years ago, as Sri Lanka sealed a 1-0 series win.
