Vaas had been negotiating with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board in recent weeks, having been underwhelmed by their offer when first approached last month.
Agreement was finally reached on Wednesday and confirmation was also received that Muttiah Muralitharan would join the coaching team in an advisory role - he still plays in various Twenty20 leagues and is not available on a full-time basis yet.
"We concluded successful negotiations with Vaas, where we discussed things like pay and his role in the coaching unit," SLC chief executive Ajit Jayasekara said.
"He will be the head fast bowling coach, with the present coaches Champaka Ramanayake and Anusha Samaranayake working under him.
"He has taken so many wickets for Sri Lanka, and we are very happy to have concluded our talks to get him into the job. Vaas will also oversee the country's pace bowling academies."
Vaas played 111 Test matches for Sri Lanka, taking 355 wickets at an average of 29.58 runs in his 15-year career that started in 1994 - he also scored more than 3,000 runs and made one Test match century.
