Following poor form Down Under, the futures of Matt Prior, Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann have been called into question, while Flower has refused to confirm whether he will still be in control after the end of the series with Australia.
However, the doubted have a chance to prove they still have the hunger and quality to perform in Test cricket - and to avoid being part of an Ashes whitewash - by firing their side to victory in the final two matches, in Melbourne and Sydney.
Game four, at the gargantuan MCG, begins at 11.30pm on Christmas Day but David Gower and his fellow Sky Cricket commentators will be on air an hour earlier to assess how England can add some respectability to the scoreline.
One man who could be key is Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes, who scored his maiden Test century in the series-losing defeat at the WACA and can be a threat to opposition batsmen with his right-arm fast bowling.
However, if England are to end their losing sequence against the Baggy Greens, they will have to stifle wicket-taking machine Mitchell Johnson - 23 scalps in the series at 15.47 - and negate Aussie stroke-makers Michael Clarke and David Warner, who have scored two tons apiece.
