Hughes had it worse?

Derbyshire's Chesney Hughes has joined a select group after hitting 270no in his side's innings defeat.

You really do have to feel for Derbyshire's Chesney Hughes. He not only missed out on a significant Derbyshire milestone but also joined a first-class batting list of mixed emotions. At Headingley this week, the 22-year-old left-hander came within just four runs of passing a Derbyshire batting record that had stood for 117 years when he carried his bat for an outstanding 270 not out in his side's first innings against Yorkshire. But he was left stranded agonisingly short of George Davidson's 1896 record of the highest score ever by a Derbyshire batsman in first-class cricket, the 274 he struck at Old Trafford against Lancashire back in the 19th Century. Little did Hughes know, however, that his nine-hour effort would not only be insufficient to secure a positive result - he would suffer the ignominy of being on the end of an innings defeat! And the Anguillan-born batsman, who recently qualified for England, would join a list in joint 10th place for the highest scores in defeat but also sits second in a list of highest scores to have suffered an innings loss.

Legendary

Hughes slots in behind the famous Indian batsmen Vijay Hazare on the innings loss list after the former India Test captain struck 309 in vain for Rest against Hindus in the final of the Bombay Pentangular Tournament in December 1943. Hindus amassed 581-5 declared in their first innings with another legendary batsman Vijay Merchant helping himself to 250 not out. The Rest were knocked over for just 133 and, forced to follow-on, it was left to Hazare to mount a challenge. He compiled 309 in 417 minutes, which included sharing a sixth-wicket partnership of 300 with his brother Vivek, but it is fair to say that Vijay dominated the stand as Vivek was dismissed for just 21 in the 332 minutes they stood together! They were dismissed second time round for 387 - Vijay having scored 84 per cent of the teams runs off the bat.

Record

Hughes was a long way short of the all-time record in defeat in first-class cricket, a record that has been held by Essex's Peter Perrin for 109 years. Perrin's 343 not out against Derbyshire at Chesterfield in the visitors' 597 all out is still top of the pile as Derbyshire responded with 548 and then saw Essex removed for only 97 second time round and went on to lose by nine wickets. So, you really do have to feel for Hughes - but he is in very good company.
