Lotto Soudal rider Stig Broeckx remains in a coma after having surgery to relieve pressure on head injuries caused in a crash at the Belgium Tour.

Broeckx was seriously injured in a mass pile-up caused by a collision between two race motorbikes during Saturday's third stage.

The 26-year-old was left with two bleeds on his brain, and an early prognosis that surgery would not be required had to be changed on Tuesday.

"Because of the increased intracranial pressure, Stig Broeckx had to undergo two operations, which stabilised the intracranial pressure again," his team said in a statement.

"Stig will need to stay in an induced coma for a while to let his body recover from the injuries and surgery. At the moment no prognosis can be made."
