Taylor Phinney’s hopes of racing at this year’s Tour de France are all but over after breaking in his leg in two places at the United States national road race championship on Monday.
The 23-year-old BMC rider crashed on a descent 43km into the 165.5km race and fractured both the tibia and fibia in his left leg, as well as injuring his left knee.
Phinney, who had won his second United States national time trial title two days previous, underwent surgery in Tennessee on Monday night and will also miss the Criterium du Dauphine next month.
Eric Marcotte, 34, won the US national road race ahead of SmartStop team-mate Travis McCabe in second and Garmin-Sharp’s Alex Howes in third.
