Britain’s Simon Yates extended his lead at the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday by winning the 11th stage.
The pink jersey wearer attacked on the final climb with a kilometre to go, finishing two seconds ahead of defending champion Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands.
The stage was raced on a hilly route over 156 kilometres from the central city of Assisi across to Osimo near the Adriatic coast.
And the late move from Yates took the Mitchelton-Scott rider 47 seconds clear of Dumoulin (Sunweb) in the overall standings.
It was a second stage win of the race for Yates but, while he retains the maglia rosa jersey for the general classification leader, Chris Froome's Giro - his first since 2010 - remains a disappointment.
The Team Sky man dropped off the pace during the final ascent of the stage to finish 40 seconds behind Yates.
That leaves the four-time Tour de France winner 23rd overall - fully three minutes and 20 seconds off the overall lead.
Closer to the front, Groupama-FDJ's Thibaut Pinot is third, one minute and four seconds behind Yates, with Domenico Pozzovivo the highest-placed Italian rider in fourth spot.
